Towns around Brno want a different concept for transportation development

Brno - Municipalities mainly from the surrounding area of Brno want the South Moravian Regional Office to consider their alternative traffic development concept. According to them, it is more economical and environmentally friendly. Representatives of the municipalities stated this to journalists today. In response to their initiative, in June, the Supreme Administrative Court (NSS) annulled the principles of regional development. The regional office filed a constitutional complaint against this.
     Representatives of the municipalities criticized today, for example, the traffic situation in Brno. They assert that the city needs a "full-fledged bypass." "The agglomeration is already burdened for a long time and beyond the permissible level," said the mayor of Ostopovice, which lies to the south of Brno, Jan Symon.
     The principle of the alternative proposal is to divert transit traffic away from Brno. The expressway R43 heading north from the city would be a "full-fledged" bypass of the city. The study also addresses the route from Brno to Vienna via Břeclav. The South Moravian Region has long considered the route through Mikulov.
     "We believe that if there is an alternative transportation concept on the table, it should be compared with the official one," Symon stated.
     After the June annulment of the principles of regional development by the NSS, no constructions of regional significance can arise in South Moravia. The principles contained corridors for the backbone road routes in the region. According to the court, the region did not adequately assess the so-called cumulative and synergistic effects of the constructions, that is, the impact on the environment and public health.
     The proposal to annul the principles, which have been in effect since last year, was submitted by a group of 14 municipalities and 13 individuals. The regional representatives began to consider a constitutional complaint almost immediately after the ruling was issued, and work also started on the assignment for new principles of regional development.
