Hradec Králové - The reconstruction of the Small Square in the historic center of Hradec Králové is likely to be delayed by several months. The construction, costing over 30 million crowns and considered one of the priorities of the Hradec city hall, will be slowed down by appeals from two civic initiatives against the building permit filed in recent days. This was stated by Hradec's Deputy Mayor Josef Malíř to reporters today. The association Nový úděl is unhappy that four old linden trees should remain in the square. "Originally, it was planned that the trees would be cut down, but other initiatives were against it. We agreed that the linden trees would stay. We are now in a vicious circle," said Malíř. The association Light for Hradec is also dissatisfied with the planned unconventional lighting of the square with lamps directly on the walls of the buildings. Initially, the city hall planned to start the reconstruction of the square in April. "If the region rejects the appeal, the delay could be about two months. Otherwise, the delay will be much longer. The region can completely cancel the building permit," Malíř said. The square, a substantial part of which is currently taken up by a parking lot for nearly 100 cars, is expected to undergo a complete transformation according to the city hall's vision. Workers will re-pave the square, the number of parking spaces will decrease to around 20, and there will be new benches and other furniture. The current fountain in the middle of the square will remain. The actual repair of the square's surface is to be carried out by the company Colas CZ, which won the tender for the repair with a bid price of 15 million crowns excluding value-added tax. The city hall will spend additional funds mainly on the reconstruction of engineering networks.
