Jablonec nad Nisou - The completion of the repairs to the facade of the town hall tower in Jablonec nad Nisou will again restrict parking in the city center. Work will begin right after Easter. The 51-meter tall tower with a clock has been under repair since last year, but it has become clear that the reconstruction will be more demanding than expected. The tower needs to be statically secured, said the spokesperson for the city council, Markéta Hozová. The total cost of the repair will exceed 12 million crowns, of which 7.6 million was paid by the city last year.
Delays in the tower repair were caused by concerns over aluminate cements, which were added to concrete in the 1930s to speed up their curing. No one at that time anticipated how their properties would change over time and reduce strength. “We had tests carried out that determined the further course of the tower reconstruction. This has extended into this year. However, we are now confident that the repair will be of high quality and will last for many more years,” explained the reasons for the delays the head of investment construction, Pavel Sluka.
While the western facade of the town hall has had a new brizolit scraped plaster in a light hue since last October, including smooth window frames known as revealed frames, the tower had to endure the winter only in gray core plaster. “First, it is necessary to statically support its outer masonry. In some areas, it will be necessary to reveal the reinforced concrete structure and rebuild the infill. The company will then continue with the restoration of the facade,” described the further steps by the Deputy Mayor, Lukáš Pleticha (ČSSD).
The Jablonec town hall is a significant example of Czechoslovak interwar architecture. It was built between 1931 and 1933 based on the design by architect Karel Winter. The listed building is gradually being restored, with the city investing over 35 million crowns in it over the past six years. Last year, the western part of the building received a new facade, and all plumbing elements were repaired and replaced. The project included the restoration of 48 tower windows and 14 atypical American windows in the western wing. After the tower repairs are completed, facade work will continue on the southern and eastern sides of the town hall. The costs are estimated at 8.2 million crowns.
