Jihlava – The Jihlava Town Hall today presented the repaired historic house on Masaryk Square to the professional public. With its new name, Stříbrný dům (Silver House), it recalls the famous history of the former royal mining town associated with silver mining. The house also contained equipment from a mint dating back to the 13th century, which is a find of European significance, said Deputy Mayor Martin Laštovička.

The archaeological finds are showcased in the Gothic lower part of the house. In the modernly renovated attic with glass views, a documentary film center and a research space focused on architecture is being established. The city organization Brána Jihlavy, which takes care of culture and tourism, also has a place in the house, and there is additionally one apartment for accommodating various guests. A tea house has returned to the ground floor, with its space expanded by a modern extension into the courtyard.

"It has been five years since the initial idea to renovate this house came about,” said the deputy mayor. He reminded that the investment of 80 million crowns was made possible for the city by a grant from so-called Norwegian funds. He noted that the silver line referencing silver Jihlava runs throughout the house.

According to architect Marek Štěpán, the gray-silver color of the house was inspired by the film screen of the documentary film center. "When you approached me with the proposal to restore this house, I realized that I was embarking on an adventurous journey,” he stated. He recalled the limited time of the project and the search for its form and content. He indicated that he wanted to create a free space and allow different approaches to creation and craftsmanship to resonate.

The valuable house in the municipal heritage reserve has belonged to the city since 1907. Its floors were last divided into apartments through various renovations. Construction work began at the end of 2021. The house features restored elements from various periods, complemented by modern works often inspired by finds within the house, such as motifs of old tiles. The paintwork of the well-equipped music hall is also new, where screenings, lectures, and concerts can take place.

The reconstruction of Stříbrný dům and other projects will be addressed at the professional conference Architecture of Renewal on May 16 and 17. Architect Marek Štěpán and archaeologist Šimon Kochan will also speak at the conference. A program for the public will be held in the house from May 17 to 19.
