On October 24–25, 2024, an international conference on Placemaking Brno will take place in Brno, focusing on the creation of public spaces and their transformation into vibrant places for people. The conference is organized by the Archipop organization and is supported by Placemaking Europe. The event, which will take place at the creative hub Kumst in collaboration with the Vesna Association, will welcome significant Czech and international experts in urbanism, architecture, and community planning.

During the two-day program, prominent representatives of placemaking will speak and open discussions on topics such as tactical urbanism, strategies for temporary use, streets for children, community involvement in city planning, inclusion in architecture, and revitalization of urban spaces.

„Placemaking contributes to creating places that we build relationships with, care for, and spend time in, whether we are just passing by on our way home from work or meeting with neighbors. And it is up to us how these places will look,“ says Marie Joja, director of Archipop.

The conference will present strategies for creating places that are not only functional but also have a unique identity thanks to the people who live, work, and spend their leisure time there. The program will also showcase examples of placemaking realization, including case studies from European cities, and will offer interactive workshops.

„Our goal is to reach a wide range of conference participants – from representatives of city self-governments, the creative industry, and the professional community, to members of local communities. We want to connect the Brno creative scene with partners of European significance from Placemaking Europe and Plateau Urbain,“ adds Barbora Ponešová, a member of Archipop and co-organizer of the event.

The format of the conference itself demonstrates a placemaking spirit: it connects two institutions in the neighborhood, selects speakers across professional spectrums, ages, and gender compositions, includes lectures, exhibitions, workshops, and targets various audience groups. Presentations will be conducted in Czech or English (without simultaneous translation).

In October, thematic exhibitions will simultaneously take place at Kumst (October 10–30) and the Mini FA VUT Gallery in Brno (October 1–25), mapping the collaboration between Archipop, the Faculty of Architecture, and the Vesna Association, all under the auspices of Vesna Lab. The festive openings will occur on the first days of the exhibitions at 6:00 PM.
