Plzeň – Plzeň will attempt to sell the dilapidated cultural house Peklo. The city does not have the funds for the renovation of the heritage-protected building, part of which, with General Patton's museum, was briefly visited this year by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. The repairs are estimated in the hundreds of millions of Czech crowns, with some estimates reaching up to three-quarters of a billion required for renovation and bringing the building into use. Today, the councilors decided by a majority vote that the city would offer Peklo in a competition for at least 6.56 million Czech crowns, which is one-tenth of the estimated price. They also approved the conditions that the future owner must adhere to.
Peklo is in poor technical condition. When the city began partial renovation in the spring of 2018, which allocated 20 million Czech crowns, massive infestation of the ceilings and roofs by wood-destroying fungi was discovered. Due to its emergency state, Peklo is now closed, and the ceiling is supported by braces. The state of disrepair is exacerbated by rising moisture.
Among the conditions for sale is, for example, the renovation of the entire building, which must comply with the guidelines of heritage conservationists, maintaining the operation of the large hall for cultural or social events for at least 20 years from the occupancy permit, a ban on operating a pawnshop, market, or erotic services, selling weapons, or accommodation besides a hotel or guesthouse until 2042. The buyer must apply for the occupancy permit for the repaired building by 2030. The city will repeatedly check compliance with the conditions, and fines are set for violations.
The KD Peklo is among the most significant cultural objects in Plzeň. The beginning of its construction dates back to 1894, and the large hall for up to 760 seats in the Neo-Renaissance style was added between 1905 and 1907. Together with the hall of the Měšťanská beseda, it is the largest cultural hall in the city. Plzeň has also attempted to seek other solutions for Peklo. It was previously offered to the Plzeň Region, which showed no interest. No European grant titles were found from which the city could finance the repairs.
