Valtice (Břeclavsko) - In Valtice in the Břeclav region, renowned for its monuments, the restoration of the 19th-century town hall will be completed this year after ten years of work. About one million crowns remain to repair the ceilings on the third floor, significantly damaged by woodworm. These spaces are heavily used for municipal meetings and various associations, Mayor Pavel Trojan (ČSSD) told ČTK today.
The town hall was constructed by builder Jan Drechsler and is located alongside other monuments in the central square. In recent years, craftsmen have repaired the lower two floors of the building, replacing windows and doors. The upcoming work will be technically the most complex.
The total costs associated with the restoration of the town hall have not yet been quantified, but according to Trojan, they will amount to several million crowns. Half of this was covered by the town hall, while the state contributed the rest.
The historical town hall, established in 1887, was not only the seat of city representatives but also served as a court. At that time, Valtice governed 24 municipalities in its catchment area. About half were Moravian, and the other half were from Lower Austria. The construction of the town hall cost 125,000 gold coins. Half was paid by Prince Jan II of Liechtenstein, who ruled over the extensive family estate for more than 70 years.
It was in Valtice that the Liechtensteins had their residence in the castle. As part of the Lednice-Valtice area, the building has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997. Notable attractions in Valtice include the plague column from 1680, the convent of Saint Augustine, and the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Church.
