Pardubice – The city of Pardubice is preparing to renovate part of the Republic Square, which is in the center near the heritage zone. For example, it plans to remove parking spaces near St. Bartholomew's Church, instead there will be greenery. This was stated by Mayor Martin Charvát.

Cars are parked near the church, often there are more of them than there are parking spaces. In the future, there will be two parking garages in the city center, so motorists will not lose parking spots, the mayor stated.

"We want to complement the area with gravel park improvements to create a pleasant rest zone," the mayor said.

Besides gravel sidewalks, new trees should also be planted near the church. In contrast, the lawn at the war memorial, which is in the middle of the area, will disappear. This memorial spot will stand out more and have better access. Architects want to give the space the shape of a square, and the project has been prepared by the town hall for about two years.

One option is a potential connection of the square with Werner's waterfront, the path would lead between houses with arcades. However, the lands are private and there is a gate there now.

The project includes the area in front of the church, further around the memorial to the bank building. It does not address the traffic situation on the busy street; the city plans to deal with changes in the layout of lanes for cars and cyclists only after completing the bypasses.

The proposed transformation of part of Republic Square currently also excludes the underpass at the Green Gate, which is opposite the bank. Due to its critical condition, it has been closed since 2015, and the city has not yet decided what to do with it.

"The project is very economical, simple, and if it can be supported by grants, that would be great. We want to fit into a reasonable amount that can be realized from our own sources in the next election period," the mayor stated.
