Poděbrady - The construction of a new primary school in the Žižkov area of Poděbrady for 700 to 750 children could begin in 2025, possibly 2026. It will include, for example, a community center that will also be used by local residents. The city council approved a contract last week for the development of an architectural study. The design will be prepared by the MID architects studio and is expected to be completed by the end of January next year, Mayor Roman Schulz (ODS) said today.

The inspiration for the future school building was a study of the gymnasium building in Holice. "But it is only a model study; for the purposes of our primary school, it needs to be substantially increased in size because it will be intended for 700 to 750 students," said Schulz. It will feature, for example, a large gymnasium with specifications for handball, a community center that could be used by the public in addition to the school, and a cafeteria. "We are considering that the dining service could also be opened to the outside," Schulz added. The school is expected to be equipped with modern technologies, including a green roof.

In Žižkov, there is currently a building for the first stage of the T. G. Masaryk School. After the new school becomes operational, the city plans to use the old building for purposes such as a health center, a senior club, or a kindergarten, Schulz said.

Poděbrady, where nearly 15,000 people currently live, had a demographic study conducted last year. According to it, by 2030 there will be a need for an additional 18 classes for primary school students in the city's catchment area. According to an earlier estimate by the city, the costs of building the school will be around 600 million crowns, with plans for the use of subsidies. The city will pay over one million crowns, excluding tax, for the architectural study.
