Prague – The Prague magistrate will provide Prague 12 with a grant of 120 million crowns for the completion of the new town hall building. This was decided by the Prague councilors. The town hall was originally supposed to cost 470 million crowns, but the price has risen to 575 million. Construction began last year and is expected to be completed next year. The magistrate previously provided the city district with an interest-free loan of 250 million crowns.

The leadership of the city district failed to secure enough money through the sale of assets, as originally planned. In exchange for the grant, the leadership of Prague 12 offered to transfer part of the property it planned to sell to the capital city. According to councilor Jan Chabr (TOP 09), the magistrate will utilize it in social services or healthcare.

The Prague 12 office currently operates in seven buildings that are in poor technical condition. The costs of building the new town hall between Písková Street and Generála Šišky Street, which began in the middle of last year, were originally estimated at approximately 470 million crowns.

The building, designed by architects in the shape of three sugar cubes referencing the now non-existent Modřany sugar factory, is expected to open in the middle of next year. The magistrate’s interest-free loan of a quarter of a billion must be repaid by the town hall by 2036.

The allocation of funds was criticized by opposition councilor Ivan Pilný (ANO), who was bothered by the fact that the city is giving money to the town hall rather than lending it. "I cannot support the proposal for it to be a grant. If it were a loan, I wouldn’t have a problem with it," said Pilný.

The historic town hall of old Modřany was demolished in the 1980s. In 2007, the leadership of the city district proposed to use the Prior building in Sofijské Square for its needs. This option was estimated to cost between 340 and 390 million crowns. Prague 12 then had an analysis carried out which showed that the most advantageous location for the new town hall construction is precisely the land between Písková and Generála Šišky Streets.
