Prague - In Prague 12, work has begun on the construction of a new town hall, which will be located between Písková and Generála Šišky streets. The construction company Geosan Group, which is the contractor for the project, this week started the demolition of the original buildings, waste disposal, and the relocation of engineering networks, said the company's spokesperson Vlasta Končelová. The construction cost is not expected to exceed 550 million crowns, and the city hall has provided an interest-free loan of 250 million crowns for the construction of the city district. The building is expected to be completed by the end of 2020.
From July to September, the company will be excavating construction pits, performing earthworks, and deep foundation work for the building. This may restrict residents in the vicinity of the construction site, Končelová stated. The company and the city district informed local residents and apologized for the noise.
The architectural design of the town hall is inspired by the history of Modřany, and the three buildings are meant to resemble sugar cubes. A sugar factory stood in Prague 12 from 1861 until 2005. The new town hall will be barrier-free, and will include a café, a restaurant, and several shops are planned as well. Additionally, there will be a multifunctional hall for council meetings and cultural events. From the new ceremonial hall, it will be possible to access a roof terrace.
The town hall offices currently operate in seven buildings, which are in poor technical condition and their operation is not economically sustainable. According to an economic analysis commissioned by the town hall, the annual costs of the new building are expected to be around eight million crowns.
The historical town hall of old Modřany was demolished in the 1980s. In 2007, the leadership of the city district proposed to utilize the Prior building on Sofia Square for its needs. This option was estimated to cost between 340 and 390 million crowns. Prague 12 then had an analysis conducted, which showed that the most advantageous location for the construction of the new town hall is the land between Písková and Generála Šišky streets.
