Prague - Some abandoned pavilions of the Holešovice market could find use as theater spaces or a creative center. The vegetable market could also be renovated. This was said to journalists today by the site manager Karel Král and the deputy mayor Petr Dolínek (ČSSD). Cultural, artistic, and commercial activities could be combined here. It is still unclear when the local brothel will disappear from one of the buildings on the site.
A new space that could be created at the market is a creative center in pavilion number 40. Among other things, so-called startups could operate here. The building would be renovated and managed by the organizers of the Signal Festival. "We would like to build a creative center here that would focus not only on education but could also have studios, for example. There are spaces in the basement where the resulting works could be presented," said the director of the Signal Festival, Martin Pošta.
The organization is currently negotiating with the city regarding the use of the building. Galleries and studios from Karlín Studios also expressed interest in moving to the pavilion. They have not yet reached an agreement with the city. "We do not want to go against them; we will try to negotiate," Pošta said.
The empty pavilion number 12 across the way could then gain an artistic space Jatka78, which combines alternative theater, circus, and art. "In the pavilion where they are located, they do not have enough space and this pavilion could be suitable for them," said Král. However, in this case, no specific agreement has been reached yet.
The Prague 7 city hall recently stated that it would like to create a cultural district Art District 7 in the market. According to Dolínek, it is currently necessary for the city to start investing in the area and gradually change it according to the wishes of the residents and visitors. "When we make even a small investment, we can do something with the market. There have been many overall concepts looking for the complete use of the market in the past, and none has ever been realized," Dolínek said. For example, according to Král, half a million crowns would be enough for the renovation of the vegetable market.
When the local brothel will disappear from the premises and municipal property is still unclear according to Král - the establishment is not officially registered as a brothel. It will depend on the outcome of disputes between the city and the brothel operator.
The area of the former slaughterhouse has been a cultural monument since 1993. The city council requested the cancellation of the heritage protection of the entire area in 2012 and proposed to declare only some objects as monuments. However, the Ministry of Culture did not agree with this at that time.
