Prague - Prague councilors today postponed the plan to develop an architectural and urban study for construction at the Žižkov Freight Station. The deputy mayor Petr Dolínek (ČSSD) and councilor Karel Grabein Procházka (ANO) told ČTK today. The reason for the postponement is the completion of some parts of the material for the study assignment. The intended study should determine what will be built where on the site and should also address the use of the monument-protected main building. There have been disputes about construction at the station for several years. It is unclear when construction might potentially begin. "Some questions still arose regarding certain details of the submitted material. However, it is certainly not about leaving the area fallow," said Dolínek.
Councilors will discuss the proposed wording of the study assignment later this week. "The document will be resubmitted on Thursday at the operational meeting of the council," said Procházka.
The development of the extensive area of the long-unused train station has been discussed for several years. Originally, in addition to the tracks, the mentioned building was supposed to disappear, but local residents and some politicians opposed it. It was later declared a cultural monument, and a building ban currently applies to the entire area.
The study should outline urban and transport solutions for the area, including public spaces. For example, where tram lines will run or where schools and parks will be located. It should also address the functionalist building and its use. However, the study will not cover the entire area, as part of it on the northwestern edge is owned by Central Group, where a zoning decision has already been issued, and the building ban does not apply there.
The Prague 3 municipality approved a contract with Central Group in recent weeks. The opposition in Prague 3 criticized the contract, considering it unfavorable for the municipality. The deputy mayor Petra Kolínská (SZ/Trojkoalice), who is supposed to present the plan for the creation of an urban study to the councilors, also opposed it. According to her, the area should be addressed as a whole.
Disputes regarding the development of the station have been ongoing for several years.
