Prague - Prague is preparing to announce an urban competition for the construction at the Cargo Station Žižkov. The study should determine what will stand where on the site and will also address the use of the protected main building. The competition should be discussed by Prague councilors on Tuesday, according to the materials prepared for their meeting.
The development of the extensive area of the long-unused station has been discussed for several years. Originally, in addition to the tracks, the mentioned building was also supposed to be removed, but local residents and some politicians opposed this. Later, it was declared a cultural monument, and a construction ban now applies to the entire area.
The study should outline urban and transportation solutions for the area, including public spaces. For example, it will show where tram lines will run and where schools or parks will be located. It should also address the functionalist building and its utilization. The study will not cover the entire area; part of it on the northwestern edge is owned by Central Group, where a zoning decision has already been issued, and the construction ban does not apply there.
The competition to create the study should be organized by the Institute of Planning and Development (IPR) for the city. According to the submitted document, the cost of the entire procedure should range between 4.5 to five million crowns. The city and IPR will collaborate on the study, among other things, with the landowners.
The Prague 3 municipality approved a contract with Central Group in recent weeks. The opposition in Prague 3 criticized the contract, considering it disadvantageous for the municipality. The Deputy Mayor Petra Kolínská (SZ/Trojkoalice), who is supposed to present the intention to create an urban study to the councilors, also opposed it. According to her, the area should be addressed as a whole.
Disputes about the development of the station have been ongoing for several years.
