Prague - Prague knows the winner of the architectural competition for the renovation of Štvanice Island. However, the announcement of the results, which was supposed to be published in the coming days, will apparently be delayed by several months. One of the disqualified participants has appealed to the Office for the Protection of Competition (UOHS). This information was confirmed by the chairman of the office, Petr Rafaj, and Tomáš Hudeček (TOP 09), who is tasked with leading Prague.
The expert committee selected a winner over the weekend from eight competitive proposals that advanced to the second round. "We wanted to announce the results next Monday, but due to legal uncertainty, we will probably have to wait for the UOHS decision," said Hudeček. According to the competition rules, the members of the selection committee are bound to confidentiality until the results are published. What the winner proposes in his project is therefore not clear. It was previously speculated that a concert hall could be built on Štvanice. There could also be a system of footbridges and bridges leading to the island.
The appeal was sent to the office by an unsuccessful participant of the first round of the competition. "The proposal comes from one of the participants in the competition and we are currently becoming acquainted with it," said Rafaj. "In administrative proceedings concerning public contracts, including architectural competitions, one must account for a duration of several months," he added.
The first stage of the island's revitalization is expected to cost up to half a billion crowns and will take several years. According to some estimates, it could take up to five years.
Prague's Štvanice Island got its name because hunting drives took place there in the 19th century. In the 1930s, a winter stadium was built on the island, which was demolished last year due to its poor technical condition. The stadium was heritage-protected, and its demolition was opposed by conservationists as well as a large part of the public.
The vast majority of contracts for architectural projects in Prague have so far been resolved through commercial competitions, where the lowest price plays the biggest role. The announcement of the architectural competition for the renovation of Štvanice thus received positive feedback from the professional community.
