Prague - The contribution organization of the capital city, the Prague Development Company (PDS), will prepare a project for the completion of the unfinished building Nová Palmovka, where the European Space Agency EUSPA could potentially be located in the future. This was assigned to them today by the city councilors. The magistrate also plans to build a new quarter with rental apartments, shops, and a park on the city-owned land around Palmovka.
The Nová Palmovka complex began construction eight years ago. The building was supposed to be the new headquarters for the Prague 8 municipality and a shopping center or offices. However, a year later, the work on the center, costing more than a billion crowns, was halted and has not been resumed to this day. The Prague magistrate recently agreed with the Prague 8 municipality to take over the building and complete its construction.
According to the mayor's deputy Petr Hlaváček (for TOP 09), Prague is in discussions with the state about the future use of the center for EUSPA. According to him, PDS should do everything to ensure that the completed building meets the technical and safety parameters required by the European agency.
The deputy added that the main building should be completed essentially according to the original design by architect Josef Pleskot. The planned surrounding lower structures, according to him, will undergo more significant modifications from the original design. Hlaváček did not want to comment on the planned timelines for construction given the ongoing negotiations.
According to a document approved by the city councilors, the city also owns about ten hectares of land bounded by Zenklova, Sokolovská, Švábky, Vojenova streets, and the Libeň Bridge. On this land, the magistrate plans to build a new quarter with rental housing in the future. "The current task primarily concerns that building (Nová Palmovka), but it will also lead to work on the entire Palmovka," he said.
The EUSPA agency, formerly the Agency for the European Global Navigation Satellite System, also known as the GSA agency, has been based in Prague since 2012. The agency brings together the management of the EU space program operations and also takes care of the management of the Galileo navigation system.
