Brno - The councilors of the Brno-střed district want to annul the contracts concerning the controversial Wilson building. The company Wilson Properity intends to build it in náměstí Míru, which is the center of the villa Masaryk neighborhood. Residents from the vicinity are against it. Today, the council approved the creation of a team of politicians and officials who will negotiate with the company about the annulment of contracts, said Deputy Mayor Libor Šťástka (ODS) to ČTK.
In addition to Šťástka and councilor Vojtěch Mencl (ODS), the commission should include representatives of the city council as the landowner on which the construction is to take place, as well as city and district officials. Šťástka did not want to speculate on what the negotiations with the investor might bring. The ideal outcome is said to be the annulment of the contracts and then searching for a new solution. Politicians are reportedly also considering the opinions of local residents, who have been critical of the Wilson building.
"My ambition is, because this situation needs to be resolved, to reach out to the heads of clubs in Brno-střed and conduct negotiations at this level," Šťástka said. Mainly the opposition Greens and the Christian Democrats have criticized the planned construction.
The Wilson building is expected to contain about 80 apartments, shops, and also clubrooms for local activities. However, residents are concerned that it will bring traffic into the quiet neighborhood and destroy the panorama of náměstí Míru, which is currently dominated by the church. They also claim that the contracts concluded with Wilson Properity by the leadership of Brno-střed in the previous electoral term are unfavorable for the city.
Moreover, the object is to be built on former military land, which the Ministry of Defense transferred to Brno free of charge. The condition was its non-commercial use. If a commercial facility were thus built on the site, the army could demand money from Brno, politicians fear.
The councilors of the district already made a certain concession last year. They annulled a resolution that was renting the land designated for construction to the investor for 15 years. This step was intended to give Brno more freedom as the landowner in negotiations with the army. Officials from the city council are interested in the contracts for the investment archived at the Brno-střed town hall. The mayor sent them to the Brno-střed town hall for inspection due to the planned construction. It is to verify whether specific people in the office made mistakes during the conclusion of the contracts.
