Olomouc - The Olomouc City Hall has decided to file an objection to the zoning proceedings regarding the planned construction of the Šantovka Tower high-rise building in the vicinity of the historic city center. The city council approved the filing of the objection on Monday. "The objection concerns the height of the building," said city hall spokesman Michal Folta to ČTK today. The city’s initiative will be addressed by the building authority.
The construction of the high-rise building Šantovka Tower has been discussed in Olomouc for years. It is opposed by preservationists and some experts, who argue that it would damage the historic skyline of the city. The investor claims otherwise and last autumn warned the city hall that the city had committed to cooperating on the Šantovka project in a contract from 2010.
The council decided to file the objection after the approval of the amendment to the Olomouc zoning plan, which aims to set height limits for real estate in the vicinity of the historic city center and thus prevent the planned construction of the Šantovka Tower, had to be postponed for the time being.
The Ministry of Culture, led by former Olomouc mayor Antonín Staněk (ČSSD), unexpectedly announced that it wants to reassess its earlier opinion on the proposed amendment to the zoning plan. In previous years, the ministry prohibited high-rise buildings in Olomouc on land adjacent to the heritage reserve. Without the ministry's statement, the amendment to the zoning plan cannot be presented to the city council for approval. The zoning proceedings for the placement of the Šantovka Tower can thus continue in the meantime.
"The city is a participant in the zoning proceedings and as such has the right to file an objection to the proposal," Folta stated. If the amendment to the zoning plan is adopted in its current form, the construction of the high-rise building could threaten the value represented by the historic core of the city, according to the councilors.
