Boskovice (Blanensko) - The leadership of the Boskovice town hall wants to fill two gaps in the historic Jewish quarter. They have been waiting for utilization for decades. During this time, this part of the city has transformed from neglected to one of its biggest tourist attractions. How the gaps could be utilized is what the town hall is trying to find out in collaboration with young architects, said vice mayor Jaromíra Vítková (KDU-ČSL) today to ČTK. "The Jewish quarter has been a protected urban monument zone since 1990. We would like to see multifunctional buildings with offices, cafes, and apartments in place of the gaps in the future," stated the vice mayor. Architecture students from the Technical University of Liberec have developed studies for the utilization of the gaps, which will be exhibited in Boskovice starting Tuesday. Vítková emphasized that there is still a long way to go before construction begins on Bílkové and Plačkové streets. First, it will be necessary to purchase the land in the gaps and their surroundings. The town is ready to negotiate with developers. Boskovice was one of the most significant Jewish centers in Moravia for centuries. During World War II, about 500 Jews were taken from the city to concentration camps, and only 14 survived. During communism, the district deteriorated. No investments were made in the maintenance of the monuments. Some buildings collapsed on their own, while others had to be demolished. It was only after the fall of communism that the restoration of the quarter began, which has its unique charm according to architects.
