Olomouc - The study room of the Faculty of Science at Palacký University in Olomouc has improved acoustic properties and layout after its reconstruction, with its space now divided by unconventional partitions in the shape of massive tree trunks. The original layout of the study room was not ideal and reduced the quality of communication among students, said architect Jan Mléčka, who prepared the study room reconstruction project.

"The building of the Faculty of Science as a whole has a rather rational and impersonal impression, so we aimed to give the study room an individual dimension, so students would feel good in it. Ultimately, the choice fell on an informal space stylized as a forest. A little bit of nature in Nature," said Mléčka.

The study room is newly divided after the reconstruction to allow for uninterrupted work for pairs of students as well as eight-member groups. The space is divided by rounded partitions whose surface consists of virgin bark from cork oaks. "The partitions divide the space and also provide acoustic properties. Their inner part is also made of cork. Its use is very ecological because the cork bark on trees normally grows back," said the architect. Students can use the inner side as a notice board to pin up materials and information.

The new furniture in the modernized study room is made of solid oak and has an elegant impression. "It will be more of a pleasant café-like environment rather than the education factory that was here before," noted Mléčka. The study room is also equipped with bean bags in green and yellow, which, according to the architect, will enhance the relaxed atmosphere. In the future, the interior of the study room will be complemented with greenery.
