Havlíčkův Brod - In Havlíčkův Brod, work on the revitalization of Havlíčkovo Square will begin this summer. The technical networks below the square will be refurbished, the entire area will be repaved, and the arrangement of greenery will be changed. Thanks to these adjustments, traffic in this part of the city will calm down. The city hall has been preparing for the transformation of the historical square for several years. The project, costing over 80 million crowns, will now be implemented thanks to a European subsidy, said Deputy Mayor Libor Honzárek to reporters today.

The reconstruction will be completed in the second half of 2010. Due to the excavated square, tourists are likely to show less interest in the city, and merchants will lose some customers. The city hall is currently preparing to select a construction company and a schedule for the progress of the work. Detailed information about the reconstruction will be provided to all affected property owners. "We understand that these entrepreneurs are dependent on their properties," Honzárek noted. The busy road through the square will remain in operation during the repairs.
The biggest problem in the historical center of the town is the poor condition of the technical networks - there is completely missing sewage. "That’s why it’s hard to walk around the square whenever it rains in the summer and snows in the winter," Honzárek commented. The old concrete pavement is also inadequate.
Public discussions were held regarding the project. The biggest debates focused on the small park, which has been in the upper corner of the square since the 1950s. Some residents wished for its preservation, but experts advocated for a reduction of grass and shrubs. Low trees are to be placed only around the Baroque Marian column and along the perimeter of the square. Parking spaces will remain almost the same in number, but their arrangement will change. The adjustments will also affect the adjacent Dolní Street.
The subsidy of 42 million crowns was granted to the people of Brod from the Regional Operational Program. Since last year, nine projects from municipal offices in Vysočina for the adjustment of public spaces have been successful in this program; the union will contribute over 145 million. The largest portion, 52 million crowns, was awarded for the revitalization of the square in Bystřice nad Pernštejnem.
