Chrudim - The unique tourist lookout tower Bára in Podhůra near Chrudim, which was damaged by a severe storm in June, should be restored by the beginning of the next tourist season. Chrudim's deputy mayor Petr Řezníček told journalists today. After the reconstruction, the observation tower should withstand even very strong winds. "Bára 2 will be visually the same with the exception that some safety features will be tripled compared to the original structure. The original was designed to withstand winds of up to 110 kilometers per hour, while the new one should endure gusts of wind up to 150 kilometers per hour," said Řezníček. The lookout tower was destroyed by a storm on June 25, along with a wooden cottage nearby, which was meant to serve as a buffet and as a facilities for the staff of the attraction. The original observation tower, designed by architect Martin Rajniš, was constructed as a wooden slope assembled into a triangular pyramid with a minimum of connecting elements and was secured with metal rods. The structure measured 19 meters, with the observation platform located at 15 meters. "The top will be designed similarly to the masts of sailing ships; the architect is consulting it with the builder of these vessels," said Řezníček. The city aims to have the project documentation completed by the end of the year, and the actual reconstruction depends on the full payout of the insurance amount from the insurance company. The city invested nearly two million crowns for the tower and the cottage. Alongside the reconstruction of the observation tower, Chrudim also wants to build a rope center in the nearby urban recreational forests, for which it has received a European Union grant, and a natural gym. "We want everything to start functioning in May 2009, before the start of the tourist season," stated Řezníček.
