Chrudim - The original lookout tower Bára near Chrudim is set to have its own publication. The book "Bára. The Incredible Story of the Tower" by the building's architect Martin Rajniš will be published by the publishing house Zlatý řez, which focuses on architecture, and the Chrudim city hall will contribute 100,000 crowns to it. The publication will also serve promotional purposes, said Mayor Jan Čechlovský to journalists. The lookout tower is a unique wooden structure with a minimum of connecting elements. The larch planks were gradually assembled by carpenters around the perimeter of a tapering pyramid, with spacers made from battens placed between them, secured to the ground by a system of anchoring cables. A special anchoring mechanism automatically loosens the system every hour for 30 seconds to allow the wooden structure to respond to changes in humidity and temperature, while strong winds block the release. Inside the building is a cylindrical staircase made of oak planks. The observation platform is located about 15 meters above the ground, with an additional ten meters attributed to the metal pole with the flag. The lookout tower was largely destroyed by a windstorm that swept through the Chrudim area in June 2008; the city hall had it rebuilt with more advanced safety features and without the upper part. "The book not only describes the present and the construction of the lookout tower, but also its entire history. It describes meteorological phenomena that led to its destruction. Architect Rajniš presented it as the poignant story of a lookout tower," said Čechlovský. The book is expected to be published in the summer and will include an English summary. It should serve the professional public, with some copies being given to Chrudim, which will use it as a gift for significant visitors, while additional copies will be available for purchase at the information center. The Bára lookout tower is unique in its design, and for this reason, a five-meter model will be exhibited at the prestigious Biennale of Contemporary Art in Venice, where the book will serve as an accompanying publication. The model will then be displayed at the National Gallery.
