Prague - Gallerist Zdeněk Sklenář could temporarily place his artistic projects in the city Gallery 1 on Štěpánská Street in Prague 1. The press officer of Prague 1, Veronika Blažková, informed ČTK today about the negotiations between the gallerist and the city district. Until now, Sklenář had stored hundreds of original artworks in a house on Smetanovo nábřeží, where he also had an exhibition space. A gas explosion occurred in the immediate vicinity of the gallery on Monday.
"From July to September, for three months, he could move his gallery to Štěpánská 47. He liked the space, it seems that we will reach an agreement," the spokesperson stated.
For now, the works from the gallery are temporarily placed in storages. Sklenář has already stated that he will limit the exhibition program for a while, but he reportedly will not cease business activities. The collection of the prominent Czech art collector includes works by Antonín Slavíček, František Kupka, Toyen, Jan Zrzavý, and others, from classics to young artists.
The extent of the damage from the explosion has not yet been assessed. The shockwave shattered the gallery's windows, damaged the walls, and irreparably destroyed several original works of art. The gallery on Smetanovo nábřeží now has boarded-up windows, and the area is still being monitored by police officers. Builders and gas workers are working at the site.
Zdeněk Sklenář Gallery was established in the mid-1990s and systematically focuses on the presentation of Czech art both in the Czech Republic and abroad. It exhibits authors from the late 19th century to the current young generation.
