Starý Plzenec - Today, Starý Plzenec started the construction of a new sports hall and the expansion of the primary school for approximately 200 million CZK. The town near Plzeň, with around 5,400 inhabitants, aims to complete the construction while the school is fully operational within two years. Insufficient spaces for sports and children's education have troubled the town for several years, said Mayor Jan Eret (For Plzenec) today to ČTK.

"The new facility will significantly advance the century-long history of our primary school," he said. The annex to the school will include seven classrooms and one specialized classroom, as well as offices and sanitary facilities. On the ground floor, there will be a kitchen that can prepare up to 600 meals daily, along with a dining hall with a separate entrance for 100 diners.

On the first floor, the annex will connect to the historic school building, from where teachers and children will access the dining hall through a glass partition, as well as the sports hall, or go up the stairs or elevator to the tower with classrooms. The sports hall, with a grandstand for 150 spectators, will replace the current gymnasium. It will be accessible from both the school and the outside, so besides teaching children, it will also serve the public. The sports hall will have a green roof that can be used for children's movement. The new construction will require the demolition of the existing gym and workshops.

The town has been striving for the construction of a new sports hall since the 1960s. The school built in 1913 does not meet educational needs anymore, especially when the town's population was half of what it is today. "Demographic studies indicate that the number of students will continue to increase in the future," said the mayor. According to director Alice Kellerová, 388 children currently attend the school, which serves children from Plzenec and, for the upper grades, students from surrounding villages. Due to insufficient school capacity, a hundred of the youngest students must be in five classes at a separated facility, where they walk a kilometer to lunch and the after-school program. After the annex is completed, the school will have a capacity of up to 530 students, the director stated.

The costs for the construction and equipping of the annex and sports hall are approximately 200 million CZK. After difficult negotiations, the town managed to secure a promise of subsidies. "I am very pleased that we have obtained the much-needed subsidies, which will significantly relieve the town's budget. From the Operational Program for the Environment, we could receive up to 87.23 million CZK and from the Ministry of Education even 117.6 million CZK. The method of financing will still need to be resolved through demanding negotiations," said the mayor. The town has an approved budget for this year with revenues of nearly 158 million CZK and expenditures of almost 194 million.

The design of the annex and sports hall emerged from an architectural competition in 2017, which received 30 submissions. The winning proposal by Petr Sova utilized the sloping terrain and partially embedded the annex into the ground, ensuring that it will not protrude in height and allowing the construction to preserve most of the mature trees in the school garden, Sova told ČTK.
