Třebíč – Třebíč today ceremoniously opened the reconstructed changing rooms of the former river baths. The restoration work on the monument, designed by architect Bohuslav Fuchs, lasted from 2016 and cost more than 12 million crowns, said Irini Martakidisová, spokesperson for the Třebíč town hall, to ČTK. The two-story building with 160 cabins will be available for its original purpose to visitors of the Polanka swimming pool.

During the renovation of the wooden structure, the replacement and refurbishment of some parts was addressed. According to preserved photographs, the cornice and the inscription on the building were returned to their original form. The colors have returned to the original shades revealed by the survey before the renovation. The amount of 5.7 million CZK was subsidized by the Ministry of Culture.

The reconstruction of the changing rooms won the regional round of the Heritage of the Year competition. Representatives of the city received the award this April.

The Polanka River Baths started construction in 1933. They belong to Fuchs's unique designs, as they are exclusively made of wood instead of reinforced concrete. Additionally, the structure has been preserved in its authentic form, including door fillings, fittings, and benches in the cabins. According to preservationists, they are sensitively set into the valley of the Jihlava River and constitute a valuable landscape element. They stand on the former Waldstein meadow on the monastery side of the river and could accommodate up to 1,200 people. They were ceremoniously opened on May 27, 1934. In the late 1970s, a swimming complex was built nearby. The wooden changing rooms had been inaccessible to the public for several years due to safety reasons.

Now visitors of the swimming area will be able to use them again. The city is preparing to modernize the entire complex. A key aspect is ensuring the heating of the pool water. The adjustments to the buildings in the area are intended to partially correspond with the old changing room through wooden cladding.
