Uničov (Olomouc Region) - The town of Uničov will receive nearly 62 million crowns from European funds for the complete reconstruction of the main Masaryk Square. Mayor Jarmila Kaprálová told the Czech News Agency that the town will contribute an additional 11 million crowns needed for the reconstruction from its own resources. It is scheduled for next year.

According to Kaprálová, obtaining the grant was a priority. "There has been practically no investment in Masaryk Square during the pre-November decades. Significant adjustments to the historic core only began after 1990, and the various phases depended on the financial capabilities of the town and private property owners. Much has already been achieved, but the town cannot afford the truly fundamental reconstruction solely from its own resources," said Kaprálová.
Masaryk Square covers an area of 1.4 hectares and has the shape of an irregular trapezoid. The author of the reconstruction project, which has been in preparation for six years, is architect Milan Obenaus. The city council decided on the intent in 2002. This was followed by a public discussion about the appearance of the square. According to initial studies based on the demands of conservationists, virtually all greenery was to disappear from the square, but the citizens disagreed. The current trees, common hawthorns, will be replaced by maples, and a relaxation zone with additional trees will be created near the bust of T.G. Masaryk. The linden tree of freedom and the black locust growing near the town hall will remain in their place, but the avenue on the southern side of the square will be removed because it lacks sufficient sunlight.
For the reflooring, some of the original, worn granite cubes will be reused, along with new stone slabs. To create several relaxation zones in the town center, the parking system will be slightly modified. The furniture and public lighting will also be modernized. The reconstruction is expected to be completed in October 2009.
