Brno - The securing of elongated houses in Brno's Kraví hora is continuing. The city council expected the work to be completed around the middle of the summer holidays. However, it is still unclear when they will serve the artistic community. According to the spokesperson for the informal association Kreativní Kraví hora, Jiří Malenovský, about 200 musicians and artists are waiting for the spaces. He stated this to ČTK today.
The goal of the work that began at Kraví hora at the end of February is to meet fire safety conditions in the houses known as likusáky. After that, they are to continue serving the local community. "The work is ongoing and should be completed soon. Subsequently, the matter will be handed over to the firefighters and the building authority," said the spokesperson for the Brno city council, Filip Poňuchálek.
According to Malenovský, artists are now counting on returning in September, although they had hoped for an earlier date. However, they consider the recent demolition of a likusák, which was originally also intended for repair, to be a bigger problem. The city council justified the demolition by the collapse of a gable wall caused by disturbed statics. Tenants from the association criticize the decision, not believing that it was an accident. "We are considering some legal steps, but it seems like it would be difficult to contest," noted Malenovský.
There are about 20 houses known as likusáky on Kraví hora, most of which belong to the Brno University of Technology (VUT), while about a quarter are owned by the city. For several years, a community of approximately 300 artists, visual artists, sculptors, and musicians operated there. However, according to the building authority, five houses belonging to the city did not meet fire safety standards, and the city council had them closed last year. The city then decided in the middle of last year that it would repair three houses, thereby preserving the rehearsal rooms and studios. The remaining two, which served as storage, would be demolished. Subsequently, the ratio of demolished to preserved houses changed.
