Brno - After nearly a year, the reconstructed Moravian Square and Běhounská Street in the city center were ceremoniously opened today in Brno. During the renovation, which cost more than 150 million CZK, sewage, water, and other networks were repaired, and street lighting was replaced. Two of the four planned sculptures were also unveiled in the square today.
According to the municipality, the renovation of the area in front of St. Thomas Church and the Supreme Administrative Court was necessary. "Primarily, we wanted to repair the outdated engineering networks and create a real public space for the residents to meet and relax," said Mayor Roman Onderka. He stated that about half of the total costs for the repairs were covered by funds from the EU.
Public transport returned between Červený kostel and Moravian Square at the beginning of the school year. The first phase of the repairs was completed there, allowing many trams to operate on their routes again.
Today, technicians installed two more of the four intended sculptures in the square - a fountain with a stone rim and a slightly undulating water surface as an allegory of gentleness, and a bronze model depicting the city of Brno during the unsuccessful Swedish siege in 1645. The model symbolizes foresight. Last week, technicians already installed a sculpture of a man lifting a stone block from the ground while squatting, which was created by sculptor Marius Kotrba as an allegory of justice.
The historical map of Brno was made by the DSB EURO foundry from Blansko, which also created the giant, six-ton sculpture of Milan Rastislav Štefánik for Bratislava.
Originally, the square was to be dominated by a fourth monument - an equestrian statue of Margrave Jošt of Luxembourg (1351 to 1411). For now, it will not be in the square. Although the council announced an art competition, they did not order the winning piece because they did not like it.
The installation of the objects is part of the project Sculptures for Brno, which was initiated by the previous city council led by the ODS. The idea was originally to introduce reminders of prominent personalities associated with Brno, including writers, scientists, and artists who left their mark here. The plan gradually evolved into the installation of sculptural objects as such.
The reconstruction of Moravian Square began last October.
