Brno - The Psychiatric Clinic of the University Hospital Brno will have suitable spaces for patients with the most severe conditions after its reconstruction. This was stated to journalists today during a tour of the reconstruction by the head of the clinic, Tomáš Kašpárek, and Minister of Health Adam Vojtěch (for ANO). According to Kašpárek, the reconstruction will allow for safer and more humane care delivery. The reconstruction costs nearly 680 million crowns. It began last year and is expected to be completed next fall.
The facility is located on the premises of the University Hospital Brno in Bohunice. The clinic is situated in Pavilion G, which dates back to 1962. In addition to the renovation of the pavilion, the project includes the construction of two low-rise buildings that will create enclosed courtyards with the pavilion and the development of a park. "Currently, we have a block with four floors without direct access to the outdoors. When a person is in the most serious condition, they may not get outside for weeks. Therefore, the connection to the outdoor environment and the creation of protected areas in the garden is crucial," said Kašpárek.
According to him, the capacity will not increase. "However, the space will be expanded so that patients have enough room and everything will be safer and more humane. There will be an increase in beds for providing safe care for even the most severe conditions, which we have not had here so far," Kašpárek said. According to Vojtěch, the facility will also serve for the most difficult cases. "It will also cater to restless patients who have their first attack and could also be dangerous. There will be support for child patients as well. The facility is crucial not only for Brno but for the entire region," said Vojtěch.
The hospital currently cares for adult patients as well as children from three years old. It focuses on acute psychiatric-psychological care and also serves as a methodological center for the fields of psychiatry and clinical psychology. According to Vojtěch, there is a need for a facility where young doctors will be educated before they go into practice.
The reconstruction began in the first half of last year. Workers are carrying it out while the facility is in operation, with patients being relocated within the building as work is underway. The reconstruction is expected to be completed in September next year. Of the total costs of 678 million, nearly 450 million was covered by grants from European funds, 180 million was contributed by the state, and about 50 million was provided by the hospital.
