Brno - Construction of a new tram line from Bystrc to the Kamechy housing estate, which is expected to house approximately 7,000 to 8,000 residents, began in Brno today. The first passengers are expected to ride here in December 2027. The transport company will pay 1.84 billion crowns, with 85 percent of the costs covered by an EU grant from the Transport 2021-2027 program. The new line will be 1.4 kilometers long and will include three new stops, along with a new terminal, which will make it possible to reduce bus traffic.

"Following the construction of the tram line to the university campus, this is another significant project. Local residents currently have to transfer and use bus lines 52 and 54. Once the line is extended, this area will primarily be served by tram lines 1 and 3, which will offer sufficient capacity and a short interval without the need for transfers," said the CEO of the transport company, Miloš Havránek. He also mentioned that the reduction in bus traffic will decrease noise pollution in the buildings around which the buses pass.

Line 1 will operate at the same intervals as before, line 3 will continue to terminate at Rakovecká, and about half of its services will head to Kamechy. Passengers who are currently accustomed to transferring will save five to eight minutes on their journey. The track will run along Vejrostova Street, will pass under Říčanská Street via a tunnel, and the loop will be located at the intersection of Hostislavova Street and Kamechy Street.

"The preparation work will start, which includes tree felling, utility relocations, and the removal of minor buildings. This will be followed by the construction of a bridge over the tram line, connecting Vejrostova and Šemberova Streets, which will serve as an alternative access point for the area bordered by Foltýnová and Kuršová Streets. The next phase will involve tunneling for the tram tunnel and building retaining walls, constructing the Kamechy bus loop, the Hostislavova bus bay, and a parking lot on Kuršova. The final stage will be the construction of the tram superstructure, installation of the overhead power line, and equipping the tunnel with technology," stated the transportation councilor Petr Kratochvíl (ODS).

To compensate for the felled trees and shrubs, the project plans to plant 810 new trees and more than 3,500 shrubs. People can follow the construction on the Facebook profile Šalinou na Kamechy or directly on the website salinounakamechy.dpmb.cz.

Currently, Brno is not planning any further expansion of the tram network. Earlier plans to restore the long-abandoned line from Stránská skála to Líšen and the construction of a line from the Štefánikova district to Lesná have been postponed. The possibility of extending the line from Starý Lískovec to Bosonohy is under review. In the next decade, it is anticipated that new lines will be created to the new main train station, which is to be built on the site of the current lower station. However, the commencement of operations at the new station is not expected before around 2035.
