Kuřim – In Kuřim, in the Brno area, the reconstruction of the new bus station near the train station began today. The construction is expected to be completed in about a year and will allow passengers a comfortable transfer between different modes of transport, and thanks to the new roof, they can cross without getting wet in the rain. The city will pay 103 million crowns for the construction, of which 73 million will come from European funds. It will also include 50 new parking spaces and facilities for cyclists, the mayor Drago Sukalovský (Kuřim Civic League) stated in a press release. The station building was already renovated by the Railway Administration in 2018.
So far, the area in front of the train station does not resemble a bus station at all. It is more of a road where individual stops are marked on the sidewalk. “Under the new steel roof structure, we will build new platforms equipped with an information system, publicly accessible WiFi, and a camera system connected to the city police monitors,” describes the main part of the construction Sukalovský. Parking spaces will be created in place of today's loading ramp, and there will be a locker room with sanitary facilities for cyclists, lockable boxes for bikes, and also the possibility of charging electric bikes.
The construction also includes new sewage, water supply, and public lighting, a complete renovation of roads and sidewalks around the station park and on Nádražní Street. The intersection of Nádražní and Zahradní Streets will also change. “There will be a change in right-of-way, and the main street will be Zahradní,” added Sukalovský.
The transformation of the transport hub is set to culminate in the reconstruction of the pre-station park, creating not only facilities for waiting for the bus but also for social events. "We also strive to enrich the park with a typically Kuřim-like attraction. Under the park, there is likely one of the concrete air-raid shelters from World War II. If technically feasible, we want to repair the shelter and make it accessible to the public,” Sukalovský said. Later, additional parking spaces are planned to be created on Nádražní Street, but these are not part of the project.
The transformation of the Kuřim train and bus station into a modern transfer hub will benefit a large portion of people. When traveling to Brno, the train is a very fast mode of transport, reaching the Královo Pole station in ten minutes. Therefore, it is used not only by people from Kuřim but also from surrounding municipalities who drive to the station by car or bus, and now there will also be facilities for cyclists.
