Varnsdorf – In the Red Church in Varnsdorf in the Děčín region, which has been under reconstruction since 2017, several cultural events took place last year. The ceremonial opening of the neo-Gothic church built at the beginning of the 20th century is scheduled for this year. The city has invested more than ten million crowns in the building so far and has also utilized regional grants. Tomáš Secký, the spokesperson for the city, stated this to ČTK.
The city will not use the church as a cultural monument; it will serve for cultural and social purposes, such as weddings, concerts, or exhibitions. "The church is still under reconstruction, but several cultural events have already been held there. However, so far, only sporadically," Secký noted.
Last year, the wooden galleries inside the church, the internal shutters, and the belfry underwent repairs. "Restoration work was carried out on the four entrance doors of the church, the emergency repairs of the side turrets and the wooden staircase at the top of the tower were completed," the spokesperson stated. According to him, work continues on the gravel path to the church, on the stained glass windows, and on the exterior lighting of the church.
At the beginning of this year, the city could announce a tender for the contractor for social facilities, utility connections, and flooring in the main nave of the church, according to Secký. The coronavirus pandemic did not halt the repairs; all planned construction work was completed, the spokesperson added.
The church, with its interesting architecture, was built in the early 20th century from red glazed bricks in the neo-Gothic style. In 1958, it was declared a cultural monument. During the time the church was owned by the state, it fell into disrepair and was not accessible to the public.
