Ostrava - The construction of the popular science center World of Technology is being completed in the Lower Vítkovice area of Ostrava. Visitors will be able to explore science and technology in a playful way. The construction phase is expected to be completed this November, followed by the outfitting of the exhibition area. The opening is planned for September next year, said Jakub Švrček, director of the World of Technology, to ČTK today.
The World of Technology will consist of four worlds with permanent exhibitions. It will include the Children's World, the World of Science and Discoveries, the World of Nature, and the World of Civilization. One world will be dedicated to temporary exhibitions.
Currently, in the Lower Vítkovice area, there is a Little World of Technology, which was created in the former VI Energy Central, now called U6. It introduces visitors to the development of technology in the Czech lands over the past 200 years. The entire exhibition is designed in the spirit of the French novelist Jules Verne. Visitors can interact with all the exhibits. The so-called big World of Technology will operate similarly. "Visitors will be able to explore science and technology in a playful way. However, it will not focus on history, as it does in U6, but on the modern world. They will learn what science is, how weather works, how they can help the environment, what is hidden under the term energy, how the universe functions, or how simply mathematics can be explained," explained Švrček.
Part of the Children's World, intended for the youngest visitors from two to six years old, will be a fairy tale forest. "Here, children will discover how a city, a forest, and the human body work; they will play at being builders and try working with different materials. In the process, they will create their own product," Švrček added. Exhibits in the center will also be described in English and Polish.
According to him, the Ostrava science learning center will be unique not only in the Czech Republic but also on a global scale. "Elsewhere in the world, science learning centers are built from scratch. The location in the midst of a brownfield site, where the brand new World of Technology will operate, alongside the historical industrial gems of a national cultural monument, truly cannot be found anywhere else in the world," Švrček said.
He also noted that the building is interesting architecturally. Its author is the renowned architect Josef Pleskot, and the building is already attracting attention due to its glass façade, which reflects the industrial surroundings. The glass façade has almost 1,700 square meters.
