Ostrov (Karlovy Vary) - Today, the Technical Education Center was opened in Ostrov, Karlovy Vary. It was created through a comprehensive reconstruction of the former elementary school, and the Secondary Industrial School of Ostrov will teach its subjects there. The new building cost a total of 431 million crowns, including preparatory work, and the region received subsidies from the European Union for it, said the governor Josef Novotný (ČSSD) during the ceremonial opening of the school today. According to the director Pavel Žemlička, the secondary school received a gift for its fiftieth anniversary. Fifty years ago, it moved into the building of the Ostrov chateau, and although it was supposed to be a temporary solution at the time, it remained there until this year. During this summer's holidays, it moved to the new premises. "The Technical Education Center does have the most modern equipment, but that does not make a school. Now we need to fine-tune new teaching methods so that we can utilize the new opportunities of the school," Žemlička stated. The city of Ostrov contributed 20 million crowns to the construction, and the Karlovy Vary Region paid a co-financing share of about 35 million crowns, added the governor. The preparation of the construction took about five years, and the construction began in September 2009. The school, with a capacity of 750 places, will offer students and interested parties in lifelong learning 35 classrooms; in addition, they will have access to five computer classrooms and a natural sciences classroom with 30 computers. There will also be 14 workshops and workshop classrooms and four electrical laboratories for teaching. Students will find study materials, professional literature, and fiction in the newly equipped library. For physical education, there will be two gyms, a fitness room, and two sports fields with artificial surfaces, including an athletic area. Meals will be provided in the school canteen, which has a capacity of 125 parking spaces. Starting from Thursday, September 1, 660 students will sit in the desks of the Technical Education Center in Ostrov. Their education and upbringing will be taken care of by a seventy-member teaching staff. The school offers a total of six fields concluding with a school-leaving examination (information technology, engineering, electrical engineering, transportation, auto mechanics, and technical lyceum) and one field concluding with a vocational certificate (mechanic for motor vehicle repairs). Although the capacity of the school will not be fully utilized for now, according to both the governor and the director, it is probable that the modern facilities and equipped classrooms will attract more students. The region and the city have high hopes for possible collaboration with an investor from the automotive industry who has expressed interest in settling in the industrial zone in Ostrov. The design of the school is the work of the A69 - architekti s.r.o. studio. They gave the school the appearance of an industrial hall with a glass roof, imitating industrial objects. The interior of the school is largely glazed, allowing, for example, the specialized workshops to be visible straight from the atrium.
