Plzeň – Construction has begun on the foundations of the Sisters high-rise building in Plzeň. With towers reaching 94 and 83 meters, it will be the third tallest residential building in the Czech Republic. The ten-meter-deep pit for the foundation slab will gradually be filled with over 16,000 tons of steel in the load-bearing structure, approximately twice the weight of the Eiffel Tower. A "self-climbing" crane from Vienna has already arrived on site, which will rise alongside the towers and lift them above the ground in the spring, said Michal Fictum from the Plzeň-based construction, development, and investment group MIRAS Group today.

The construction pit, with a volume of 35,000 m³, is lined with a steel wall that protects the excavation from groundwater. "The measures costing over 40 million crowns were necessary due to the high groundwater level. Its pressure was substantial, so we had to encircle the pit with a ring of sheet piles," Fictum said. The steel plates will be removed by builders once the foundations are complete.

The pit has a depth of ten meters, and the boreholes for reinforced concrete piles, with a diameter of 1.5 meters, extend up to an additional 19 meters. "They will transfer the weight of the entire structure to solid bedrock, which is about 25 meters below the surface," said Martin Němec, technical director of Property Czech from the MIRAS group.

Twelve trucks brought two tower cranes to the construction site. The first will be used for the construction of a smaller building. "The second, equipped with a climbing frame, arrived from Vienna. It will be placed in the center of the main building and will grow with it to a height of 120 meters. Thus, it will gradually become one of the tallest cranes in the Czech Republic," said Tomáš Rek, the media representative of the group.

"Sisters will first appear above ground in the spring. Then they will rise quickly," Fictum said. At the beginning of the year, builders will assemble a pump and a hydraulic concrete pouring tower. The fifth technical above-ground floor is expected to be completed by mid-next year, and facade installation of the lightweight external cladding will begin in the fall. "By the end of 2026, the height of the building will reach the level of the neighboring Škoda hotel, whose reconstruction we are also preparing," he added.

The investment in both projects will reach 1.5 billion crowns. The Sisters buildings, featuring 175 apartments, offices, and shops, are set to be fully completed within three years. The taller tower will have 26 floors, while the shorter one will have 24. A public observation deck will be located on the top floor.
