Brno - Opponents of the proposed industrial zone in Brno - Tuřany may strive for a referendum on detachment from Brno. This is indicated by the cooperation of the Clean Tuřany initiative with the Independent South association, which last year initiated a vote on the independence of two cadastral areas, Přízřenic and Dolní Heršpice. According to Lenka Hersheyová from Clean Tuřany, any effort for detachment does not yet have a concrete form. However, she did not rule out the possibility of initiating a referendum in an interview with ČTK.
According to her, the decisive factor for the locals will remain whether the proposed Tuřany industrial zone remains in the draft of the new regional land use plan, the so-called principles of land development. "Depending on how the principles of land development turn out, we will consider this as well. Because as an independent municipality, we would then have a much better position," she stated.
Regional land use plans are to be approved by the councilors in June. Currently, officials are processing the materials for objections, of which various civic associations have submitted around 180. Councilors will vote on each of them, either approving or rejecting them. They must justify their decisions. Responsible councilor David Macek (KDU-ČSL) did not rule out that for some objections, he would propose that the councilors approve them. He did not specify which ones. He is to meet with representatives of Clean Tuřany before the voting.
The industrial zone is to have an area roughly equivalent to the current built-up area of Tuřany according to the most ambitious variant. Residents argue that living in the city district already burdens the operation of the airport and transit truck traffic. They claim that more greenery is needed.
Currently, two land use plans are being prepared that could enable the construction of the zone. In addition to the regional plan, there is also the Brno land use plan. According to Hersheyová, however, the main opposition for the locals is currently the regional land use plan since it takes precedence. If the zone is not included in it, it cannot be approved in the Brno land use plan either. Moreover, that plan will be approved later; according to Mayor Roman Onderka (ČSSD), it will be a success if it is voted on during this electoral period.
Proponents of the zone argue for the need for jobs. Clean Tuřany, Independent South, and Clean Šlapanice, where a large industrial park is also to be built, oppose this. "Regional representatives senselessly promote industrial zones in Brno and its surroundings, where there are twice as many residents with higher education compared to the national average, and companies will have trouble finding workers for manual professions. Conversely, in areas like Hodonínsko or Břeclavsko, industrial zones could help address unemployment,” warned Michaela Trněná from Clean Šlapanice.
