Neratov - The pilgrimage church in Neratov in the Orlické Mountains, known for its glass roof, is once again a step closer to its original appearance. The towers will receive the original baroque domes instead of temporary roofing this year. Josef Suchár from the Neratov Association, which has been restoring the monument since 1990, told ČTK. In addition, bells that were destroyed in a fire will be placed in the towers. The baroque church was burned down at the end of World War II when it was hit by a Soviet artillery shell and subsequently fell into disrepair.
"First, it is necessary to install new metal stairs in the towers. Then the domes and the bells will be lifted. The towers previously had roofs, but they were pointed and temporary. This marks the end of one of the main stages of the church's restoration," said Suchár.
Currently, the towers of the church are under scaffolding and without roofs. New dome-shaped roofs are assembled in Neratov and are receiving a metal coating and should be placed on top of the towers later this year. "The whole thing is expected to cost around 14 million crowns. This way, the towers will regain their original appearance," Suchár stated.
Two new bells were created in the bell foundry Tomášová - Dytrychová in Brodek near Přerov and were brought to Neratov on Monday, October 8. They will be installed in the towers of the church during the autumn. "The last bell was destroyed during the church roof fire. After a long time, the new bells Archangel Michael and Gabriel are now in the Neratov church," the association states on its website.
The glass roof of the church, which was created over ten years ago, is also set for repairs in the coming years. "There are leaks inside. This is due to the technology that was used; this is also a temporary roofing. For now, it is a plan; the project documentation is currently being prepared. When will we start the repairs? It depends on where we get the money,” he added.
The restoration of the towers, including the new bells, is part of a Czech-Polish project worth nearly half a billion crowns. The Czech-Polish border region in the Hradec Králové Region and the neighboring Lower Silesian Voivodeship received a grant of 432 million crowns from the EU two years ago for 26 projects. The grant money from the Czech-Polish cross-border cooperation program was allocated to support tourism, economic development, education, and culture. In the Orlické and Bystřické Mountains, thanks to a grant of 24 million crowns, previously inaccessible monuments are gradually being opened, and some churches are receiving their original baroque domes.
The Neratov Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built between 1723 and 1733, probably according to the plans of the notable Italian builder Giovanni Battista Alliprandi. The church's destruction began at the end of World War II, and in 1957, the church's vaults collapsed, and the building faced demolition.
