Prague - The largest collection of technically oriented literature in the Czech Republic is currently managed in both printed and electronic form by the National Technical Library in Prague (NTK). Due to spatial constraints in Klementinum, where this library has been located since the 1930s, the construction of a new building has been considered for several decades. Right now, preparations for the realization of the National Technical Library (NTK) are successfully concluding. The new library building will be situated in the area of technical universities near the Dejvická metro station on Fleming Square in Prague 6-Dejvice. The services offered will correspond to modern university-type libraries, with traditions especially in the west of our borders - the library will be open seven days a week, with individual and group study rooms equipped with computers, a study room with late-night hours, which will likely be appreciated mainly by students during exam periods, as well as spaces for cultural activities and relaxation. Regarding the literature provided, the National Technical Library aims to encompass not only the extensive collections of the STK but also a significant portion of the collections of the CTU libraries and the Central Library of the VŠCHT. Construction will be according to the design of the architectural studio Projektil architekti, s.r.o., which, together with the architectural, design, and engineering company HELIKA, a.s., also processed the construction project. The library is designed in the layout of a rounded square with external dimensions of approximately 70 x 70 m. The building will have five above-ground floors, which will house both the public spaces of the library (the lending area, study rooms, and classrooms, as well as a café, lecture hall, exhibition spaces, bookstore…), and its administrative facilities. In three underground levels, there will be a parking lot and a storage for books. The building permit for the construction of the NTK was issued in June 2006 based on the mentioned project. It is already known who will carry out the entire construction - at the beginning of this week, participants in the public trade competition for the "Comprehensive assurance of the implementation of the construction of the National Technical Library" received the decision on the selection of the most suitable offer. The winner is a consortium formed by the companies SEKYRA Group, a.s., SG Projekt Management, s.r.o., and SG Public Private, s.r.o. The Director of the National Technical Library, Ing. Martin Svoboda, says: "Within 30 days from the date of notification, a contract should be signed, and according to it, the new library should be completed no later than within 28 months - that is by the end of December 2008." Therefore, future users of the National Technical Library can look forward to its services already in the winter semester of 2009.
