In Plzeň, a new professional platform has emerged that does not confine the debate about the city's shape behind closed doors. The Plzeň Institute of Contemporary Architecture - PISA, z. ú. - has connected over twenty experts in its year of existence and opened topics that have long been addressed in the region without the participation of the professional public. It now invites more architects, urban planners, and specialists to join. PISA was established from the belief that quality architecture and public space do not emerge on their own - they require informed, open, and professionally anchored discussion. In the middle of 2025, the institute was publicly introduced and has since managed to informally connect architects, engineers, representatives of local governments, and experts from broader Plzeň region institutions. In 2026, the institute will launch a project implemented through three program pillars: regular professional meetings, systematic creation of popularization content, and the preparation of analytical case studies. PISA has also launched a series of online discussions called PISA Talks. Topics on the agenda include architectural competitions, the role of the city architect, height regulation of buildings, the quality of public spaces, or transportation infrastructure and the future of Plzeň's center - including an upcoming debate on the proposed 1127 bypass. PISA consciously positions itself as a natural regional partner of the Czech Chamber of Architects: it transfers professional standards and current expert topics into the local environment, supports transparent public procurement, and contributes to the lifelong education of architects. In a region where a similar stable professional platform has been lacking, it creates a systematic foundation for interdisciplinary dialogue among architects, urban planners, local governments, and the public. Democracy is discourse - and in Plzeň, it is high time for the voice of the professional community to be truly heard. Follow PISA's activities on social media and the website jsmepisa.cz.
