The program will include a discussion on the topic „Successful Abroad / Unsuccessful at Home – The Issue of Transnational Careers of Czech Architects of the Past and Present“. Participants in the discussion will be: Helena Čapková, Vendula Hnídková, Regina Loukotová, and Maria Topolčanská.
The book was published with the support of the Statutory City of Kladno and in collaboration with the Czech Center Tokyo and Kitazawa Archives.
The evening is co-organized by the Jaroslav Fragner Gallery in the premises of the Point Gallery.
Aula Publishing House, in collaboration with experts from Waseda University (Tokyo) and Rikkyo University (Tokyo), is preparing a unique book edition of prose, poetry, critical, and theoretical texts on a global scale, which will introduce to Czech and later foreign readers a hybrid, specific form of Japanese avant-gardes from 1910 to 1970.
The twelve-volume series will loosely follow the extensive projects of the Japanese publishing house Jumani, which in the last twenty years has published facsimiles of rare, or in public libraries difficult to access avant-garde texts accompanied by scholarly forewords. The texts were organized according to individual artistic movements (constructivism, dada, etc.), by authors, or by distinctive phenomena of modern times (cabaret, cinema, etc.), and were published under the titles Modan toši bunka (Culture of Modern Cities) and Korekušon Toši Modanizumu Šiši (Edition of Poetry and Other Texts of Urban Modernism).
The Japanese Avant-garde edition differs from the concept of the Jumani publishing house not only by providing translations from Japanese to Czech (partially bilingual edition) but primarily by representing various literary forms (poetry, prose, criticism, etc.) in individual volumes focused on artistic groups or movements that emerged from the entire spectrum of artistic disciplines, as was characteristic of the avant-garde production of that time.
Another feature of the mentioned edition is the intention to highlight the transnational contacts of Japan with the avant-garde movement in Germany, Czechoslovakia, or Soviet Russia, from which Japanese artists drew inspiration. It is precisely this interdisciplinary concept that makes the edition new and exceptional on a global scale.
