Christ & Gantenbein Swiss architects Emanuel Christ (1970) and Christoph Gantenbein (1971) graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at ETH Zurich in 1998. In the same year, they founded their own office, Christ & Gantenbein, in Basel, which currently employs 100 architects from 20 countries around the world. In their work, they are interested in the sustainability of form, with a sensitive and versatile feel for material, striving for continuity and placing great emphasis on the relationship with the past. They feel a great responsibility for what they do, ensuring that their works are understandable and functional for future generations. They have numerous completed projects, the majority of which stem from won architectural competitions. The office's activity focuses on a wide range of projects - private and public commissions, from small transformations to housing, office buildings, bridges, and urban planning. One of their main focal points is museum architecture. Currently, they are planning the expansion of the Kunstmuseum Basel, the renovation and expansion of the Swiss National Museum in Zurich, and the extension of the Wallraf-Richartz Museum & Fondation Corboud in Cologne. Completed projects are located in Switzerland, Germany, England, China, and Mexico. Currently, Christ & Gantenbein are working on various projects across Europe. These include the development of social housing in Paris, a residential and office building in the historic center of Hamburg, a new laboratory and administrative building in St. Gallen, and the latest extension for MACBA (Museum of Contemporary Art) in Barcelona. The University Hospital project in Zurich, which is currently in development, highlights the diversity of the scope and program in which they operate. Alongside their office work, Emanuel Christ and Christoph Gantenbein have participated in academic teaching at various schools: ETH Studio Basel, HGK in Basel, Accademia di Architettura in Mendrisio, Oslo School of Architecture and Design, among other institutes). Since 2018, they have been professors of architecture and design at the prestigious ETH Zurich, where they explore the architectural typologies of the city. The office of Christ & Gantenbein has received several prestigious awards, such as the Dezeen Architects of the Year Award 2018, the Wienerberger Brick Award 2018, Best Architects - Gold Medal 2017, and the Red Dot Award for Best 2016.
