The exhibition “Dear Architects…” aims to stimulate a discussion on the role of the architect in contemporary society – how it is perceived by the architects themselves, as well as by other professions involved in social or environmental issues (geographers, sociologists, anthropologists, political scientists, art historians, philosophers, artists, economists, politicians, etc.). The role of architects and urban planners is to articulate the demands of society and to subject them to critical scrutiny. They have the tools to influence the development and functioning of settlements and landscapes. However, with the increasing complexity of designing the built environment, architects often limit themselves to merely meeting normative, formal, or economic demands and resign from questioning or expressing opinions on social issues related to urban planning. Many architects have forgotten the ethics of architectural practice and social responsibility.
Prague architect PETR LEŠEK studied at the Faculty of Architecture of ČVUT and the Faculty of Arts at UK. Since 2002, he has led the studio Projektil architects (official profile) with Roman Brychta, Adam Halíř, and Ondřej Hofmeister, which has received several awards for its projects, such as the Environmental Education Center Sluňákov (2007), the Study and Scientific Library in Hradec Králové (2008), and the National Technical Library in Prague (2009). He is also active in the Czech Chamber of Architects, where he is a member of the Competition Working Group, participates in organizing discussion meetings, and advocates for support for architectural competitions, education for architects, and the promotion of quality architecture.
MÁRIA TOPOLČANSKÁ is an architect, critic, and theorist of architecture and urbanism based in Prague. She studied architecture at FA STU in Bratislava, at ETSAB UPC in Barcelona, and holds a postgraduate degree in Housing Management from the Institute of Housing and Urban Development at EUR in Rotterdam. She has worked as a researcher and educator at various institutions in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and since 2015 has been part of the independent platform Fake Cities True Stories, which she founded. In addition to editing the fakezine at FA STU in Bratislava, she has curated lecture series Visiting Editors (autumn 2016) and Visiting Planners (summer 2017) in collaboration with the Brno 4AM Forum for Architecture and Media and galleries VI PER and norma space in Prague. Her publication activity focuses on critical discourse, public space, and architecture education (she is also the coordinator of the master's program at ARCHIP).
SZYMON ROZWAŁKA studied architecture in Szczecin and founded the office RO_AR architects in Brno in 2011. In his architectural practice, he explores hidden forces and desires that subconsciously influence (social) expectations of architecture. He participated in preparing the lecture and exhibition cycle Compact City at the 4AM Forum for Architecture and Media and the subsequently published anthology.
SLAVOMÍRA FERENČUHOVÁ is an urban sociologist, working at the Department of Sociology at FSS MU in Brno and at the Institute of Sociology at the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. Her research primarily focuses on the sociology of the city and the history of urban studies in social sciences, the history of architecture, the transformation of post-socialist cities, and ethnography of (post-)socialist housing estates.
