Hubert Guzik: Collective and Hotel Houses

What are they? Where did they come from in Czechoslovakia? And do they have any future?

Thursday, May 22, 2014, 6:00 PM, Mozarteum Hall of the Archdiocesan Museum Olomouc (Václavské nám. 4)

The term collective has a rather negative connotation today due to recent history. However, collective houses are neither a communist invention nor a Soviet import. Throughout the twentieth century, sociologists, businesspeople, and feminists across the political spectrum contemplated such houses that would offer residents apartments and a wide range of services (cafeterias, kindergartens, nurseries, reading rooms, or club rooms) under one roof. Architects also naturally debated them. The lecture will introduce various concepts of collective housing that emerged in the Czech lands during the twentieth century. It will also attempt to show whether collective co-living can be relevant in today's time.

Hubert Guzik, a graduate of the University of Warsaw and Charles University in Prague, currently lectures on the history of architecture and design at the Faculty of Architecture CTU
