Bruno Bauer

As part of the lecture series Mondays in the Tower organized by the Club for Old Prague in Judit’s Tower (Mostecká 1, Prague 1), architecture historian Mgr. Lukáš Beran, Ph.D. will present a lecture titled Bruno Bauer and Industrial Architecture in the Czech Lands.
The design of factories in the Czech lands was part of a global development, the direction of which was determined by specialized design offices capable of designing operational schemes, spatial layouts, and structures of industrial buildings while meeting the demands placed on their appearance. In Central Europe, the most successful office was probably that of Bruno Bauer (1880–1938).
The work follows the oeuvre of Bruno Bauer, who in the Central European context appears as the most successful and, at the same time, the last of the "industrial architects," who managed to encompass all operational, structural, and architectural aspects of factory design in his work. Its comparative part provides an overview of the design activities of Bauer's predecessors and competitors in the Czech lands: specialized technical offices, construction firms, and architects. It incorporates Bauer's theoretical works into the contemporary discussion about the relationship between architecture, engineering, and industry, which determined the historiography of modern architecture for a long time.
