On Tuesday, April 11, 2017, at 5:00 PM in room A310 at the Faculty of Architecture of VUT in Brno, Poříčí 5, there will be a lecture by architect Marcela Steinbachová, who received the Architect of the Year award last year for her long-term activities. The lecture is open to all interested parties at the faculty and the general public.
Marcela Steinbachová (*1975 Prague) studied a bachelor's degree in humanities at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague (1993–1997), attended the A1 Studio of Martin Rajniš and Jiří Střítecký at UMPRUM Prague (1996–2000), and graduated from the School of Architecture of Emil Přikryl at AVU Prague (1998–2003). In October 2016, she completed her doctoral studies there. She participated in a semester internship at Cooper Union in New York, at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, and the Summer School of Architecture in Salzburg. In 2001, she founded the architecture project Kruh (now the Kruh association) and in 2011 the successful nationwide festival Architecture Day. The main goal of Kruh's projects is to attempt to present quality contemporary architecture to the public, open it for meaningful discussion, and enable dialogue between authors and residents of cities and municipalities. Since the founding of Kruh and the Architecture Day festival, she has been dedicated to their activities from the beginning and continues to develop them. The highlight of Kruh’s efforts was a long-term project with the prestigious Swiss Faculty of Architecture ETH Zurich; this year, Kruh is presenting a cycle called Female Architects to the Czech audience for the second year. Architecture Day is based on walks through architecture with architects and theorists and this year is enriched by a film festival about architecture. Kruh's activities are presented in the form of texts and interviews with invited architects published in the anthology Texts on Architecture, which Marcela Steinbachová prepares. The Kruh+ activities focus on the education of children and youth. Since 2003, she has been running her architectural practice and in 2007, she founded the architectural association Skupina. She has designed, for example, the Franz Kafka Center in Prague (together with S. Holl), the Transportation History exhibition at NTM in Prague (together with M. Rusina), the reconstruction of the Aero and Světozor cinemas in Prague, the Komorní scéna Aréna theatre, a wooden structure in Swiss Mohren (together with M. Rusina), the exhibition Rooms-possibilities of space (together with B. Škaloudová), and an exhibition at the Ostrava Museum. She is a permanent collaborator of the editorial board and a member of the editorial council of the magazine ERA21. She worked as an assistant professor at the School of Architecture at AVU in Prague and as a member of the working group of the Czech Chamber of Architects. She lives architecture, literature, films, and traveling. In 2016, she won the Architect of the Year award and an award for exceptional achievement within the Czech Architecture Award for her work in Kruh. This year, she will be the curator of the Czech Architecture Yearbook 2017, initiated by the Prostor publishing house since 1999.
