Prague - Prague will begin preparations for modifications to the banks of the Troja navigation canal in the area of Stromovka and Bubenč, which should connect to the planned construction of two backbone hot water pipes. City councilors today approved the start of acquiring the necessary land and designing the modifications, which will primarily involve surface adjustments to better align with the recreational character of the banks.

The city plans to install two large hot water pipes along the Troja canal. The first will connect the heating plants in Juliska and Holešovice. The second hot water pipe will carry heat from a so-called energy center that the city plans to build at the Central Wastewater Treatment Plant on Císařský Island, which will utilize residual heat from wastewater to provide heating for a large part of the planned new district in the brownfield Bubny-Zátory.

Considering the necessary investments, the city council wants to address coordination of works with other projects in advance, for which an analysis will be created, as well as the form of the related modifications to the banks. A study for the section in Stromovka has already been created in the past, which the city will rely on. "In the future, a café with sanitary facilities should be established there," said Prague councilor Adam Zábranský (Pirates).

For the section in Bubenč from the Malá říčka to the Podbaba station, according to the document approved by the councilors, it will be necessary to acquire land to enable its expansion and to build a proper road. Zábranský added that the expansion is also significant because a main cycling route A1 runs along the canal.

According to Ondřej Boháč, the director of the city Institute of Planning and Development (IPR), the city will use conceptual documents created in previous years for the modifications. "The area will undergo a complete transformation, the technical communication will become a wide promenade, traffic will slow down, and there will be plenty of space for pedestrians and cyclists. New access points to the water and recreational areas are planned," he stated. According to IPR information, the start of the works depends on the decision regarding the construction of the hot water pipe, with the completion of the city-wide heating study expected in 2027.

Also this year, according to IPR, the Directorate of Waterways and Prague selected the winning architectural design for raising the bridge to Císařský Island to ensure sufficient navigable height. The entire area around the bridge will be modified with a new docking station on the island, stairs to Stromovka, and facilities with public toilets and refreshments.
