Miroslav Šik

During the autumn, Czech-Swiss architect Miroslav Šik, in collaboration with the Centre for Architecture and Urban Planning (CAMP), will hold three lectures titled BIG, FUN, CORRECT. The public will be introduced to his perspective on the processes shaping contemporary cities, their development, and future. The first lecture is titled BIG CITY and will take place for free for the public on September 12 at 7 PM at CAMP.

Renowned architect Miroslav Šik wants to present his concept of the modern city in three forms to the Czech audience. In the first lecture, BIG CITY, he will focus on metropolises filled with corporate headquarters, university campuses, large-capacity hospitals, complex transport hubs, and growing agglomerations. In October, he will then explore the concept of FUN CITY – a city of social interactions, family life, and work, characterized by unyielding enthusiasm and energy. The cycle will conclude with a lecture on CORRECT CITY, the ideal city for a communal and satisfying life for all social strata.

“I have been invited to present my views on the development of the contemporary city through lectures. Therefore, I will not be showcasing my practical work, but rather presenting a reflective view of an architect and urbanist on the trends in Western European cities in recent years. I will illustrate everything with examples from the Swiss reality that I am familiar with and experienced, which differs in many ways from that in neighboring countries,” said Miroslav Šik.

The architect has long served as a professor at ETH Zurich. At the same time, he has been leading his own architectural studio since 1988. He is behind significant buildings and projects, such as the Catholic parish center St. Antonius in Egg, a special educational school with full-day care in Zurich, and residential buildings in Swiss cities like Winterthur, Haldenstein, and Zug. He represented Switzerland at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2012. Since 2018, he has been leading the Atelier of Architectural Creation at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague.

Whether Prague is BIG, FUN, or CORRECT, people will have the opportunity to assess for themselves. Miroslav Šik will offer participants in the lectures at CAMP the chance to deduce from his hypotheses and verifications to what extent the development of Prague has approached Western trends and tendencies.
