Romana Rosová – Martin Strakoš The Ostrava Work of Architect Wunibald Deininger February 9, 2012 at 6:00 PM
Architect Wunibald Deininger (1879–1963) significantly influenced the appearance of Moravian Ostrava, where he realized several notable buildings in the first and second decades of the 20th century. The first of these was the Commercial and Industrial Bank building, which he designed together with his father Julius Deininger. This building from 1904–1905, currently a landmark of Smetanovo Square, is now threatened with demolition in connection with the owner's plan to establish a commercial and social center in the vicinity and partly on the site of the present building. The speakers will present the original and current appearance of the building and will discuss its heritage values. W. Deininger subsequently realized a group of apartment buildings in Ostrava from 1911–1913, and especially the National Hotel (later Palace), the most significant work of a student of the Vienna architect Otto Wagner not only in the Ostrava region. With these buildings, he aligned himself with the Neo-Biedermeier style. He enriched his classicizing foundation with references to both vegetative and geometric Art Nouveau while managing to utilize the achievements of modern technology. The lecture will present the preserved architectural values of Deininger's buildings, some of which, including the aforementioned bank and the former National Hotel, are at risk of disappearance. Part of the event will be the presentation of the publication "Ostrava Work of Wunibald Deininger," which was written by the speakers and published by the National Heritage Institute, regional specialized workplace in Ostrava.
