Norma space thanks you for your support this year and invites you to the first Reading architecture of 2021, this time on the theme of Mutual Aid.
Architecture is increasingly bringing into focus concepts such as: collaboration, solidarity, non-standard processes, and rapid responses. How can they transform architecture, integrate into our daily work regimes? Can new perspectives on collaboration principles help us function in our work collectives? How can we integrate increased sensitivity and solidarity into our thinking? What tools can help us sustain and effectively coordinate group work? And how not to burn out?
The new book Mutual Aid by Dean Spade, published in the Verso Pamphlet series as a quick response to the current crisis, describes precisely the mechanism of solidarity and mutual aid. Although it stems from the American context with a different social background, the general principles are valid here as well:
“Face to face with this situation, more and more people feel called to respond in their communities and are creating brave and innovative ways to share resources and support vulnerable neighbors. When such acts of survival are tied to a social movement requiring transformation, we call them Mutual Aid. (...) Mutual Aid provides people with the means to engage in movements responding to their urgent needs and concerns, and creates social space where a new wave of solidarity occurs. At its best, Mutual Aid genuinely produces new ways of life, where people have the chance to create their own systems of care and generosity that aim to address issues of violence and support a fulfilling life.
This book is about Mutual Aid: it explains why it is so important, what it looks like, and how to engage in it. It provides its theory as well as specific tools and guides that help address some of the toughest questions that mutual aid groups face – how to work as a group, how to come to decisions together, how to prevent and manage conflict, how to address burnout – all in order to create lasting activities that can succeed within their agenda.”
We will discuss alternative tactics in architecture with guests from the fields of architecture, sociology, and community activism.
The event will take place online on the Zoom platform.
